ABOUT KENNEDY HERITAGE RESIDENCES

Our History

A hand-hued post and beam building was erected on the crest of a Saint John River valley hill, and it watched over the movements below. Its past saw encampments and Pow Wows, an early colony that grew into a town, and ferries and ice bridges replaced by an icon, the Longest Covered Bridge in the World.

The house became a one-family home before the 1840s on a 400-acre self-sustained farm. It stored potatoes and produce in its basement and had an earth floor and 3-foot thick stonewalls. With only working horses, an axe and a single plow, the family worked the land. A large barn was raised as the farm was produced, and a two-story addition to the box-style house was added. The addition contained two servant quarters on the upper level with a stairwell that descended to a storage shed and separate milk room. The chicken coop and a three-bay open shed were added in years to follow.

Through the years, changes occurred from oil lanterns and candles to electricity. The outhouse was swapped for inside plumbing, and water pails of drinking water from a nearby spring were replaced by a well that pumped tasty, clean water. Horsehair insulation held by the lathe was removed to install fibreglass, and the original hand-made nails and spikes in the rough-hewed boards of the attic remain covered by a replaced steel roof.

Several families owned this stately estate and went to sleep at night listening to the moans and groans of the settling shelter. The walls witnessed many family meal gatherings on Sundays after church, heard squeals of excited children during celebrations, smelled baked goods and fresh laundry, and watched their shared sorrows and joys.

Like others, the Kennedys arrived more than seventy years ago and had immediate warmth and security from the lodging. From generation to generation, this property was cared for with love and pride, leaving its mark with additions and uniqueness.

This next version of the Kennedy Heritage House architecture is a complete modernization of this same farmhouse but revitalizing for the modern age.
